Quite often I have the members, in turn, read out loud the rules for brainstorming as stated on page 70. Thus, in their own words by repetition, the fact is impressed on the members that this is a green-light session. I usually display a green traffic light or a green circle of cardboard to dramatize the idea. We have gone through extensive research and reading to produce this article on motivation. The most dramatic way I know to show how most conferences are negative and firmly opposed to new ideas is to have each member of the group write on three-by-five cards three killer phrases, such as: "It's against policy," "It won't work," "We've never done it before," "The boss's wife likes blue." Then I have the cards shuffled and passed around in the group. They are read aloud by panel members.
